Dear reader,
The European Climate and Health Observatory turns four—a milestone worth celebrating. Happy birthday to all our partners who have been part of this journey!
What started as a joint initiative by DG SANTE, DG CLIMA, and the EEA, has evolved into a powerhouse of knowledge, collaboration, and policy action. Today, climate change is no longer a side concern in health policymaking—it is at the forefront, and the Observatory has been instrumental in driving this shift.
But we are just getting started. With its mandate extended until at least 2028, the Observatory is set to scale up its impact. This means more research, stronger partnerships, and an even greater focus on equipping European health systems to tackle climate-driven risks head-on. The launch of the 2025-2026 workplan in January marks a major step forward, with a bold priority: moving from knowledge to action through capacity building. Health professionals and policymakers across Europe will have access to the tools, insights, and networks they need to lead the response to climate challenges.
And there’s more on the horizon. The Observatory will play a critical role in shaping the upcoming European Climate Adaptation Plan, ensuring that health is a cornerstone of Europe’s resilience strategy. This is an opportunity to turn ambition into concrete action—and we need every stakeholder on board.
At DG SANTE, we are proud to be at the heart of this effort. The path ahead is clear: stronger partnerships, smarter policies, and a relentless commitment to protecting public health in a changing climate. Let’s build a future where Europe leads the way in climate resilience and health security.
