European Climate Adaptation Newsletter

Issue August 1, 2025

Are European countries prepared for changing summer conditions?

In Europe, the summer period is increasingly characterized by heatwaves, droughts, wildfire, and other extreme weather events, putting lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods at risk. Resilience-building measures are essential for enhancing Europeans’ quality of life and ensuring Europe’s overall competitiveness and security. The Climate Impacts and Preparedness Assessment, a new EEA product, explores how climate change is impacting Europe and what actions are being taken in response. Actions that protect vulnerable populations from the impacts of climate change are essential for keeping people safe through the summer period and beyond. In addition, a new EEA report published in June highlights that while the EU and its Member States increasingly recognize justice as a key principle of climate adaptation, its practical application remains limited. The report provides practical examples and guidelines to help ensure no one is left behind and emphasises that learning about adaptation best practices is a good starting point for designing effective and equitable adaptation measures. You can learn more about the status of adaptation across Europe and how Member States are adapting to climate change impacts by visiting the recently updated country profiles country profiles.
